Did Disney STEAL ‘Zootopia?’ See the Evidence Here

Imitation may be the most sincere form of flattery, but in Hollywood, stealing someone else’s work is a big no-no. Unfortunately, Disney may have gone too far when creating their smash hit Zootopia.

Cute characters or stolen intellectual property?

The adorable animal movie just won the Oscar for best animated feature. Not only is the animation excellent, but the story is timely and uplifting as well. Zootopia centers around a city of animals and focuses mainly on a rabbit named Judy Hopps. The cute bunny wants to be a police officer, but she faces prejudice due to the fact that she’s, well, a bunny. Through this story, the movie examines the ideas of discrimination and social stereotypes.

Though this story is great, it may not be too original. Writer Gary Goldman, known for working on the screenplay of Total Recall and executive producing Minority Report, claims Disney stole the story from him. According to Goldman, he pitched the idea for Zootopia to Disney in 2000 and 2009, and Disney rejected it both times.

Too many similarities…

Disney’s team is, of course, denying the allegations. However, Goldman hired animators to help bring his characters to life, and there’s no denying they look strikingly similar to the Zootopia characters.
