Move over, Thor! Look out, Iron Man! There’s a new Marvel hero entering the cinematic universe, and he’s a force to be reckoned with. A lesser known character called Black Panther is getting his very own movie. The trailer just came out, and it’s already a smashing success.
The character of Black Panther, a.k.a. T’Challa, doesn’t have the advantage of being one of the Avengers. However, he did make a debut already in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. Right from the start, fans fell in love with actor Chadwick Boseman’s character. His quiet confidence, his sense of justice–and his completely badass fighting skills–made him an instant hit.
His appearance in Civil War was preparation for the Black Panther standalone movie. Now that the trailer is out, it looks like the hype surrounding the new character was warranted. The trailer shows Black Panther’s homeland of Wakanda. Until recently, everyone believed Wakanda to be a third-world country. However, they’ve actually become extremely technically advanced.
So far, people are praising the movie’s use of traditional African imagery alongside high-tech advances. Also, the line about it being hard for a good man to be king? Chilling!

In less than 24 hours, the trailer raked in over 89 million views. It helps that it first aired during the NBA finals, which contributed 19 million views to that total. That makes it the third most highly-viewed Marvel trailer in a 24-hour period.
Coming in first place is Thor: Ragnarok, which will be out this November. It wound up getting 136 million views in the first day. After that is Captain America: Civil War, which earned 94 million views.
In addition to Chadwick Boseman, Black Panther stars Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker and Andy Serkis. The flick hits theaters on February 16, 2018.
