Marvel’s Explanation for Jane Foster’s Absence in ‘Thor’ is Making Fans Angry

Could Thor find love on planet Earth? Things were looking up for him and Jane Foster. But Natalie Portman ditched the Marvel franchise, so now what?

We’ve known for a while that Portman’s character would not be appearing in Thor: Ragnarok. But now Marvel is changing its in-movie explanation for the disappearance. At first, they explained Portman’s absence by just saying Thor: Ragnarok wouldn’t be taking place on Earth, where Jane Foster resides.

Now, however, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige changed his tune. In a recent interview, he said he wanted Thor to match up with someone more like himself.

“We wanted Thor to encounter somebody that was near his equal and that his relationship with Jane may have evolved in unexpected ways in between The Dark World and Ragnarok and we wanted to pit him against a character who was much more his equal and in many ways his superior,” he said, referencing newly introduced character Valkyrie, played by Tessa Thompson.
