If the next James Bond thriller, Spectre, due out October 26, is half as good at its trailer, this is one surprising, slick, suspenseful spy film that could even do the near-impossible, which is to top the last James Bond thriller, Skyfall.
We are stuck with Daniel Craig as Bond and could do far worse, but the supporting, plot line here would likely carry anyone through in good form, let alone someone of Craig’s obvious talents.
Skyfall carried Craig. The story was too rich, the evil nemesis too deliciously nasty, the music, cinematography and directing too good to deny. But it left the most famous spy in the world with a task even Bond (or even Craig) might have trouble with: Making a better film after Skyfall hit every turn so well.
In so many words, if you could separate a film from its promotions, this may be the Film Trailer of the Year. This one comes at you without any spoilers. Spectre should be on your must-see list, if you like invincible spies who have a few bullet holes in them, but are still cat-like in their stealth and smarter than you.
The film also stars Naomie Harris as Eve Moneypenny, Christoph Waltz as Franz Oberhauser, Ben Whishaw as quartermaster Q and Monica Bellucci as Lucia Sciarra.
