#1. La La Land
No other film this year left me leaving the theater with the mouth smiling, the eyes dazzled, the toes tapping and the mind rejuvenated. It’s a dizzyingly detailed and colorful production of an artistic romance between Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, both of which have some amazing charisma and dance moves. Director Damien Chazelle proved in 2014 that he can make jazz work for nail-biting drama with Whiplash and now he’s made the case that it can serve as a brilliantly engaging style for musicals as well.
