Like many an action thriller, The 5th Wave starts on a sunny day with a bright blue sky above. But, says narrator Chloe Grace Moretz, who plays Cassie Sullivan in the upcoming Columbia Pictures release, little did the characters know that would be the last normal day of their lives.
From the calm beginning, the trailer shows a planet invaded by aliens, who plan their attack in five waves. The first wave knocks out all power. The second rumbles Earth with an earthquake large enough to shake the whole planet. The third wave is the spread of disease. But the fourth is the most ominous of the lot. In the fourth wave, the aliens were “among us,” the narrator says, taking over bodies of surviving humans.
This sets up a suspense level that is based on trust. Who is an alien and who is not?
The science-fiction thriller is based on the Rick Yancey novel with a screenplay written by Susannah Grant. It is set for release Jan. 15, 2016 and features Moretz as Cassie Sullivan, Nick Robinson as Ben Parish, Alex Roe as Evan Walker, Maika Monroe as Ringer, Liev Schreiber as Colonel Vosch and Zarchary Arthur as Sammy Sullivan.
